A: The fit between therapist and client is remarkably important! Research shows that the most powerful predictor of therapeutic success is the quality of the therapeutic relationship. For this reason, I offer a free 15 minute phone meeting. During your complimentary phone consultation, you’ll begin to develop a sense of whether I am a good match for you in terms of your goals, concerns, personality, and preferences. If you determine that it feels like a good fit, we’ll continue discussing these matters in an initial session.

A: I work very interactively with my clients. Therapy centers around a relationship, and like all relationships, the therapeutic one requires give and take. A stereotype of therapists is that we are “blank slates” and respond to questions about ourselves with answers such as “What do you think?” Although the focus of therapy certainly does center on you, I may disclose suggestions, alternative perspectives, or recommendations if I believe they would be therapeutic or helpful. I communicate with clients in a down-to-earth and relatable way. I have worked with a number of individuals who have had negative previous experiences in therapy, and have been relieved when they realize that working with me is a considerably different experience.

Training. All four degrees allow therapists to deliver psychotherapy. Therapists with an LPC, LCSW or LMHC degree attended a master’s program for 2 years following undergraduate studies and then accrued supervised hours for licensure. Psychologists with a Psy.D. or Ph.D. doctoral degrees attended a doctoral program for 5-7 years after undergraduate work and completed a year-long internship and year-long postdoctoral fellowship. I have my Psy.D., completed a year of training at a state psychiatric hospital, and a year of residency working with children, adolescents, and families. In addition, I am required to complete continuing education hours each year to maintain my license. In addition, I am part of a special agreement that allows me to see clients in most states.
